A prince was born in 624BC to King Suddhodana and Queen Mahamaya in Kapilawaththu currently known as Nepal. He was named Gautama Shakyamuni or Buddha. He was referred to as the “Enlightened One” because he sought enlightenment, leaving the comforts of the palace in the process. He wanted to know much about the realities of life, but this was not possible in the palace where he lived since the answers seemed elusive anywhere near the place he called home. He therefore wandered around India, sometimes staying in isolation for several days. It is said that there are times he stayed in the forest for days on end without food. At one instant, a compassionate woman had to offer him a meal that saved him from near starvation. After that, he stopped fasting too much, realizing that there was more to life than torturing one’s self with endless worries and questions that sometimes lacked answers.
Lord Buddha is believed to have lived during the Mahajanapada era in India when Bimbisara, the Magadha empire ruler reigned. According to historians, Lord Buddha performed numerous miracles. He is said to have been a man who would survive for many days and nights without food, water, medicine and a bath. All these qualities made him a supernatural being amongst his followers. Perhaps what made him stand out were his teachings on a variety of topics regarding life and the human existence. During the time he lived, he did not follow the religious teachings of his time, preferring to follow his own religious quest.
Most of the time, Lord Buddha meditated. That is why he sought a solitary life in the forests or wherever he could find peace. He believed that when he sat alone, he concentrated on his thoughts, leading to his unmatched wisdom. A careful examination at the true nature of life led to many realizations that helped in his teachings. On this basis, he got followers who later became Buddhists.
