The Namgyal Monastery is a sacred place founded by Gendun Gyatso, the second Dalai Lama in 16th century Tibet. Located in Lhasa, this monastery is not just a holy place but is also a respected centre for learning, contemplation and meditation on the vastly profound Buddhist treatises. The monastery monks also play a vital role in assisting the Dalai Lama with religious public affairs. The 200 monks housed in the monastery perform several rituals like Yamantaka, Guhyasamaja, Vajrakilaya, etc., for the welfare of Tibet.
Overlooking the mountain ranges of Dhauladhar, Namgyal monastery is surrounded by lush pine trees adding to the tranquillity of this beautiful monastery. The prayer wheels, Buddhist shrines and the fact that this monastery is the royal residence of the Tibetan spiritual leader makes this one of the most important Buddhist monasteries in the world.
