Located at an altitude of 13,500 feet above sea level, near the Spiti Valley, Kye Monastery is set apart from all other monasteries for being the biggest and oldest monastery of the Lahaul and Spiti district. The construction of this monastery can be dated back to 1000 AD after which there were several attacks which this monastery miraculously withstood. Housing over 300 Lamas, this monastery is the treasure trove of priceless scriptures, stucco images, ancient musical instruments and rare paintings. The monastery also has a unique collection of weapons which is a highlighted element. All these have led to the monastery being an acclaimed centre for religious studies and research pertaining to Buddhism. The prayer halls, prayer wheels, rangoli adorning the floors and the view from the roof of this monastery are simply spectacular.
Other than the religious and research aspect, the Kye Monastery is famous for hosting various processions and Chaam dance performances during the annual festival.
