Recognised by the UNESCO, the Ajanta caves are a complex of 30 caves and are located at the outskirts of Jalgaon city, India. Hidden amidst the lonely glen above the Waghora River, the complex was scooped out into the heart of rocks on the horseshoe shaped cliff. Discovered in 1819 AD, caves 9,10,19,26 and 29 were formerly chaitya grihas(prayer halls used by monks) and the rest were viharas or monasteries. The religious influence on Buddhism is evident from the paintings centred around Bodhisattvas, Jatakas and incidents from the life of Lord Buddha.
